In the clinical low-flow closed anesthesia system, carbon dioxide absorbent is used to absorb carbon dioxide exhaled by the patients. Depending on the content of alkali, medical carbon dioxide absorbents are usually divided into (sodium, potassium more than3wt%)-containing absorbent and (sodium, potassium less than lwt%) absorbent, the former absorbent(soda-lime) will take a toxic reaction with the anesthetic to generate toxic substances such as CO and "compound A". But it is tough and has a quite high CO2absorptivity. While the absorbent (Sodium, potassium less than1wt%) are rather inert to the anesthetic, the CO2absorptivity is relatively low. At present, domestic commercial carbon dioxide absorbents are poor in quality, both the mechanical strength and CO2absorptivity are low. This work developed a formulation and a preparation process of CO2absorbent and then realized industrial production. The output absorbent are tough and shows high CO2absorptivity.The experimental results showed that4wt%of the sodium aluminum silicate can effectively toughen the absorbent. While further increased content of sodium aluminum silicate makes little contribution to mechanical strength. Instead, the absorptivity of the product decreased significantly. It was also found heat treatment temperature plays an important role in the improvement of mechanical strength, absorbent treated in100-120oC for5-15minutes shows both good mechanical strength and CO2absorptivity. Furthermore, the addition of polyvinyl alcohol (2wt%) could effectively avoid the "fly ash" phenomenon, which may cause patient feel uncomfortable. In addition, this work also took a preliminary study to prepare calcium lime. The experimental results showed that both triethanolamine, lithium hydroxide can replace sodium hydroxide as the alkaline additives. And the economic benefit of this production line was up to million-class.
