After China’s entry into WTO, the exchange with the international world has been dailyincreasing. English, as an international language, has played a more and more important rolein the international society. As college students in the new era, they must satisfy therequirements of the society not only with proficient professional skills but also with fluentEnglish. Vocational education aims to cultivate the application-type talents that can directlyengage in the front work of industries like management, manufacturing and service. Thefostering of English professional ability must be included in the training target. However, atpresent English Teaching in nursing majors in vocational college is still in basic Englishteaching stage, where only general English is focused on while professional English isignored. Under such circumstances, it is not conducive for nursing personnel to developingtheir overall qualities. Therefore, the public English teaching reforms in nursing must beenforced.The research investigates the application of public English teaching reforms in nursingmajors in order to improve the current situation of college English teaching and learning,especially to raise learners’ interest and improve their English proficiency and professionalability. The researcher has chosen two freshmen classes of nursing major in Hebei Women’sVocational College, one as control class, and the other one as experimental class. Reforms onteaching method, teaching content and assessment method were carried out in experimentalclass, while control class adopted the traditional teaching mode. During the two-termexperimental study, the instruments such as tests, questionnaires, classroom observation andinterview were implemented in order to make the experimental study more persuasive andmeaningful. Meanwhile, to make the comparison between the experimental and controlgroups more clearly and accurately, SPSS software was adopted in the statistical analysis afterthe data collection.From the data analysis, the researcher found out that the public English teaching reformsin nursing majors in vocational college could increase students’ interest in learning Englishand increase their English proficiency as well as their professional ability. These findings also gave English teachers some implications: ESP theories should be applied in public Englishteaching in all majors in vocational college; various teaching methods should be combinedand used in the English teaching; English teachers should keep enriching themselves anddevelop themselves into double-qualified teachers who are not only with enough Englishteaching skills but with adequate professional knowledge to meet the new needs of thevocational college at present. On the basis of the practical operation of the whole research, itis hoped that this study could be reference for further research.
