ObjectiveTo search for the relative factors associated with the recurrence of rectal carcinomaafter Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) operation by retrospectively analyzing theclinical and pathological resources of patients after TEM operation.MethodsSixty-six rectal carcinoma samples from the patients who had received operations inour hospital from January2007to December2010were selected as the objects of thisstudy. Clinical and pathological specimens of these patients, including gender, histologicalpattern, depth of invasion, differentiated degree, size of the tumor, distance from the edgeof the anus, depth of resection and distance from the cut to the tumor, were collected andclinical data related were retrospectively analyzed. Statistical analyses of the clinical datawere accomplished via SPSS13.0. enumeration data were tested by, and it was statisticallysignificant when P<0.05.ResultsFollow-up durations of all these patients were longer than one year and the averageduration was22months. In these66rectal carcinoma patients,34cases were male and32cases were female, with the male/female ratio of1.06:1. The overall recurrence rate afterTEM operation was7.6%. Partial recurrence was seen in3male and2female.2casesunderwent the malignant transformation of villous adenoma, and3cases experienced thecanceration of villous-tubular adenoma.2cases were moderately differentiated, while2cases, poorly differentiated. As for the staging of the tumor,1case was pTis,3cases pT1and1case was pT2.1patient had a tumor of a diameter of1-2cm, while4cases, over2centimeter. The distance from the edge of anus were less than7cm in2patients, while over7cm,3cases.1patient was resected the submucosal layer,2cases, the muscular layer,while2cases were resected thoroughly.2patients had a distance from the cut to the tumorof less than0.5cm, and3cases,0.5to1cm. According to the statistical analysis, the reccurence rate of rectal carcinoma after TEM operation was related to the histologicalpattern, differentiated degree, depth of invasion, size of the tumor, distance from the edgeof anus and the distance from the cut to the tumor (P<0.05). The age and depth of resectionwere unrelated to the reccurence, with no statistical significance.ConclusionThe partial reccurence of rectal carcinoma after TEM operation was closely relatedto the histological pattern, differentiated degree, depth of invasion, size of the tumor, distance from the edge of anus and the distance from the cut to the tumor. It was instructivein standardizing the TEM therapy of rectal carcinoma.
