Introduction:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect ofvertical facial types and the soft tissue chin morphology to profileattractiveness. Methods:Three beautiful female were selected. They were one withhigh mandibular angle, one with average angle;and one with lowangle.Their profile photographs were taken by the same photographer.(1)A series of new photochrome were generated by the small scale (2mm perunit) modification of soft tissue chin in the sagittal direction and verticaldirection.52raters consisting of17orthodontists and35laypersons wereasked to rate each pictures.(2) A series of new black-and-whitephotographs were generated by the same method, and each pictures wereevaluated by the same raters.(3) A series of new silhouettes of the samepictures were generated by the same method, and each pictures wereevaluated by the same raters. Results:The score of photochrome:There is no esthetic difference ofvertical change in high angle;while slightly protrude chin was perceived to be more beautiful than retruded chin. For the average angle, lower chin wasmore attractive;slightly protruded chin was the favorite. In the low angleindividual higher chin was preferred by raters;slightly protruded chin wasmore beautiful than retruded chin. The score of black-and-whitephotographs:There is no esthetic difference of vertical change in highangle;while slightly protrude chin was perceived to be more beautiful, andat least4mm movement make statistical difference. For the averageangle, lower chin or a chin with unchanged height were more attractive;protruded chin was more attractive than retruded chin. In the low angleindividual higher chin or a chin with unchanged height were preferred byraters;slightly protruded chin was the most attractive. The score ofsilhouettes:There is no esthetic difference of vertical change in high angle;while slightly protrude chin was perceived to be more beautiful, and atleast4mm movement make statistical difference. For the averageangle, lower chin or a chin with unchanged height were more attractive;protruded chin and slightly retruded chin were more attractive. In the lowangle individual higher chin or a chin with unchanged height werepreferred by raters; protruded chin was more beautiful than retruded chin. Conclusion:The effect of vertical facial types and chin morphology to facial profile attractiveness were different.Orthodontists should take this intoconsideration when dealing with different patients.
