In recent years, head trauma is become very common in children. Children are undergoing fast physical development, their brain is sensitive to the trauma. Though there is no distinguish mark on the surface in an accident, it may cause brain damage and affect the development of intelligence. So the head trauma of child has been paid more attention in this few years, especially to scientists. This paper presents a finite element model of detailed anatomical child’s head structure based on the child’s head CT scan image, image processing and segmentation and surface generation and volumetric meshing. We have verified the validation of this model by cadaver experiment. The results of the simulation are nearly consistent with the cadaver experiment. Under the condition of7900N, the peak pressure in the coup area for the child model and cadaver experiment were265.5Kpa and140.874Kpa, respectively. The countercoup pressures for the child model and cadaver experiment were-125.2Kpa and-45.133Kpa, respectively. There are two factors for the difference between simulation experiment and cadaver experiment. The first, modulus of elasticity of the child’s skull is smaller than adult’s and skull of child exists suture. The second, adult’s skull thickness is higher compared to the child. And the result shows that the child is more vulnerable to injure compared to the adult when they were hit by the same value of force or HIC.The main contents of this study are as follows:1) According to knowledge of anatomy difference was found between child’s head and adult’s; the basic concepts of biomechanics and character of head trauma caused by impact was reviewed; summarized the development of head trauma criterion of children and adult;2) A3D finite element model of child head was developed based on the child head CT scan image, image processing and segmentation and surface generation and volumetric meshing;3) The model was verified by cadaver experiment and the factor of intracranial pressure was discussed;4) Frontal and lateral impact experiment were simulated by6YOC head FE model。This paper developed a six-year-old finite element model of detailed anatomical structure, which is helpful for the research of the children’s head trauma and designing protective tools of the children.
