The fixed number years-identification of Chinese material medicinal was a difficulty in theprocess of the traditional Chinese pharmacology. The number of “rhizome bowl”and theexperience of herb-workers are used to identify the age of ginseng for thousands years. We hadexplored the estimation methods of the plant age, just like the alongevity of the herbs Panaxginseng C. A. Mey. Ginseng as a study material, in this paper, there are three optimized methodswas used to compare which come from the different scientific fields of the biological technology, quantitative chemical and morphology analysis. The technique of age estimation wassystematically researched in the ginseng for the first time. Systematic study obtained the resultsfollowing:(1) The phenomenon was found in our study of telomerase that the speed of the vascularcambium outside expanding growth fluctuated in a definite value. Based it, we put forward ahypothesis that the radial length of the vascular cambium to expand (Δb) and the radius of crosssection (Δr) are in every activity cycle if the external environment factors unchanged every year. Therefore, We defined that the proportion(k) of Δr and Δb is constant (Δr/Δb=k).Then each of Δband Δr fluctuating in a fixed value, because of the different rainfall、temperature、sunniness everyyear. The hypothesis was proved correct within the domain of definition range, through theextrapolation of mathematical method. Hence, the telomerase experimental results just becomeeffective evidence on mechanism.(2) Ginsenoside Rb1, Rg1were increase with age undulating and citric acid decreased withage, but ginsenoside Re did not change significantly. Metabolites, although it cannot accuratelyidentify the age, it can guide the harvest age in the production process. It is very important thatselecting a pure part engraved with the age for TRFs. The average telomere length progressivelyshorter with the age, but there is a significant reduction in5、6years old, so the age can beestimated by combining the content of ginsenoside Rb1.(3) Based on the allometric laws, the empirical formula Y=K*X1MX2Nwas designed for ageestimation of Ginseng, this method is more accurate than the method of the proportion of cambium area and sectional area. The mathematical model is established for three kinds oflandraces ginseng from different agricultural base of Northeast China. The3-D curved surfacemathematical model also can be applied to identify the age of ginseng with on damage by X-ray.
