Objective: To explore the clinical value of the level of serum galectin-7on thediagnosis of bronchial asthma.Methods:71asthmatic outpatients as the asthmatic group and17healthy people asthe healthy group were selected in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian MedicalUniversity during Jul,2011to Aug,2012. The asthmatic group was further divided intotwo groups which were the chronic persistent asthma group (n=54) and the clinicalremission asthma group (n=17). The chronic persistent asthma group included threegroups of the mildly persistent asthma group, the moderately persistent asthma groupand the severely persistent asthma group. The patients of the chronic persistent asthmagroup were divided into two groups which were the group of the medical history≤1year (n=13) and the group of the medical history>1year (n=41). The diagnosis standardof asthma referred to the Global Initiative for Asthma(GINA2011)and bronchialasthma prevention and treatment guidelines formulated by the asthma group of thebranch of the Chinese medical association respiratory disease(2008). All cases didn’thave smoking history, hemoptysis, pneumothorax, bulla, the history of respiratoryinfection during6weeks, heart insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, history of tumor,rheumatic disease, others allergic diseases except asthma and allergic rhinitis,immunosuppressant treatment. The group of chronic persistent asthma didn’t use anyglucocorticoid, leukotriene receptor antagonist,theophylline and antihistamine drugduring1week. The group of clinical remission asthma was reached the level ofasthmatic control for more than3months. The level of serum galectin-7was measured by the method of ELISA. The forced expiration volume in one second percentagepredicted was checked by lung function instrument. All data was analyzed by SPSS17.0statistical analysis software, P<0.05was considered statistically significant.Results:1. There was difference between the chronic persistent group or theclinical remission asthma and the healthy group in the level of serumgalectin-7[(1618.09±800.20)pg/mL vs (478.76±109.77)pg/mL,(1749.24±932.62)pg/mLvs (478.76±109.77)pg/mL, respectively P<0.05]. The level of serum galectin-7of theasthmatic group was much higher than that of the healthy group.2. There was difference between the group of medical history≤1yearand the group of medical history>1year in the level of serum galectin-7[(2648.21±863.08)pg/mL vs (1291.47±413.20)pg/mL, P<0.05]. The level of serumgalectin-7of the group of medical history≤1year was much higher than that of thegroup of medical history>1year. There was difference between the group of medicalhistory≤1year or the group of medical history>1year and the healthy group in thelevel of serum galectin-7[(2648.21±863.08)pg/mL vs (478.76±109.77)pg/mL,(1291.47±413.20)pg/mL vs (478.76±109.77)pg/mL, respectively P<0.05]. The level ofserum galectin-7of the group of medical history≤1year was the highest in these threegroups.3. There was difference between the mildly chronic persistent asthmagroup and the healthy group in the level of serum galectin-7[(1348.00±495.04)pg/mL vs(478.76±109.77)pg/mL, P<0.05]. The level of serum galectin-7of the mildly chronicpersistent group was much higher than that of the healthy group. There was differencebetween the mildly chronic persistent asthma group and the severely chronic persistentasthma group in the level of serum galectin-7[(1348.00±495.04)pg/mL vs(2029.16±1075.21)pg/mL, P<0.05]. The level of serum galectin-7of the severelychronic persistent group was much higher than that of the mildly chronic persistentgroup. There was no difference between the moderately persistent asthma group and themildly persistent asthma group or the severely persistent asthma group in the level ofserum galectin-7[(1477.12±563.86) pg/mL vs (1348.00±495.04)pg/mL,(1477.12±563. 86) pg/mL vs (2029.16±1075.21pg/mL)pg/mL, respectively P>0.05].4. Application ROC curve in diagnosis of asthma,when the level of serumgalectin-7was set at≥1485.10pg/mL, the sensitivity was94.40%, specificity was71.4%,accuracy was65.80%; when the FEV1pred%was set at≤80%, the sensitivitywas100.00%, specificity was52.90%,accuracy was52.90%.Conclusion:The level of serum galectin-7can be a potential biomarker forevaluating inflammation levels of asthma and helpful to the early diagnosis of asthma.Further study is needed to verify the value of the serum galectin-7on the judgment ofthe asthma severity.
