Objective:To study the clinicopathologic parameters of spindle cell tumour, examine the expression of CD56in spindle cell tumour and analyze the clinical prognosis of spindle cell tumour. Methods:This study collected137cases of spindle cell tumour, in which12case of leiomyoma,28case of leiomyosarcoma,20case of rhabdomyosarcoma,17case of schwannoma,6case of Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour(MPNST),13case of synovial sarcoma,24case of solitary fibrous tumours and haemangiopericytoma,11case of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma/malignant fibrous histiocytoma (UPS/MFH),5case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour and1case of carcinosarcoma were included. All tissues were reclassified by hematoxylin and eosin stain(HE) and Immunohistochemical technique (Fixed in10%neutral buffered formalin, embedded and sliced by paraffin and observed under optical microscope). The marker were S-100、 SMA、 Actin、Myogenin、MyoD1、Desmin、Bcl-2、CD34、 CK、CD99、CD68. And the spindle cell tumour were reclassified to smooth muscle tumour, rhabdomyosarcoma, peripheral neurogenic tumors and other spindle cell tumour. Immunohistochemical technique (En Vision method) was used to assess the expression levels of CD56in different groups. Statistical analysis were performed by using SPSS13.0statistics software. Pearson Chi-square Test and Fisher Exact Test were used for overall comparisons of multiple sample rate and pairwise comparisons.Results:1The expression of CD56in smooth muscle tumour:The expression rate of CD56 was47.50%(19/40) in smooth muscle tumor, of which leiomyoma showed16.67%(2/12), rhabdomyosarcoma showed60.71%(17/28). There were statistically difference in the expression of smooth muscle tumour, rhabdomyosarcoma and peripheral neurogenic tumour(P<0.01). There was no statistically difference in the expression between smooth muscle tumour and other spindle cell tumours (P>0.01).2The expression of CD56in skeletal muscle tumors:The expression rate of CD56in rhabdomyosarcoma was95.00%(19/20). There was no statistically difference in the expression of CD56between rhabdomyosarcoma and peripheral neurogenic tumour (P>0.01). There was statistically significant difference in the expression of CD56between rhabdomyosarcoma and others spindle cell tumour (P<0.01).3The expression of CD56in peripheral neurogenic tumour:The expression rates of CD56was95.65%(22/23) in peripheral neurogenic tumour, of which schwannoma showed100%(17/17) of expression rate and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour showed83.33%(5/6) of expression rate. There was statistically significant difference in the expression rate of CD56between peripheral neurogenic tumour and other spindle cell tumours (P<0.01).4The expression of CD56in other spindle cell tumours:There were54case of other spindle cell tumours, the expression rate of CD56was24.07%(13/54), including13case of synovial sarcoma,24case of solitary fibrous tumours and haemangiopericytoma,11case of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma/malignant fibrous histiocytoma (UPS/MFH),5case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours and1case of carcinosarcoma. The expression rate of CD56was46.15%(6/13),16.67%(4/24),27.27%(3/11),0%(0/5), and0%(0/1) respectiely.Conclusions:1The expression rate of CD56in peripheral neurogenic tumour and rhabdomyosarcoma were statistically higher than that in other kind of spindle cell tumors.2There was statistically significant difference in the expression rate of CD56between benign spindle cell tumors and malignant spindle cell tumors in which malignant tumors showed higher expression rate of CD56.
