Part one: levels and innfluencing factors of FeNO among Chinese adults of Wuhan cityObjective: The aim of this study were to investigate levels of FeNO as well as factorsinfluencing levels, to provide scientific proof for making early preventive measures of therelative diseases. Methods: The survey was carried out from April to May2011in the Hankou and Hanyangdistricts in Wuhan Metropolitan Area, China. A total of3121adults living in the city for atleast five years were recruited. Data collected by interview included age, education level, marital status, occupational stutus, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and self-reported diseases (including asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructivepulmonary disease, diabetes, emphysema, nephritis, flu, and allergic reactions). A physicalexamination was performed on all participants according to the established standard methods, including measurements of height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, heart rateand blood pressure. In this study, venous blood from each subject was collected andimmediately analyzed in the laboratory. FeNO measurement was performed by a nitric oxideanalyzer in the field. After excluding the participants with missing data, a total of2798adultswere included in the analysis.Results:(1) the geometric mean (GM) of FeNO of participants was23.92ppb (95%CI:23.48ppb-24.37ppb). The FeNO levels were higher (GM:27.09ppb,95%CI:26.30ppb-27.90ppb)than females (GM:22.33ppb,95%CI:21.82ppb-22.87ppb, p <0.01).(2) FeNO levelsamong the participants were associated with gender, age, height, heart rate, high educationlevel (>6years), self-reported diabetes, smoking or former and current smoking, use ofkitchen exhaust fan/hood, but no associations between FeNO level and lung function level, marital status, drinking status, doing exercise, and lung fuctions (including vitalcapacity, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second).(3) there was gender difference in factors influencing the FeNO levels.(4) the prediction equation foroverall participants is as follows:FeNO level (ppb)=4.2476×1.2683sex×1.0062age/year×1.0076height/cm×educational levels (0-6years=1,7-12years=1.0631,>12years=1.1238)×smoking status (current smoker=0.7630,former smoker=0.8956, nonsmoker=1)×1.0024heart rate/(beats/min)×1.1044self-reporteddiabetes×0.9217exhaust fan/range hood(R2=0.097).Conclusion: FeNO levels of Wuhan adult residents were affected by many factors.Part Two: levels and innfluencing factors of eCO among Chinese adults of Wuhan cityObjective: The aim of this study were to investigate levels of eCO as well as factorsinfluencing levels, and provide scientific clues for further study. Methods: Community selection and data collection were same with the first portion.Themeasurement of eCO was performed by a carbon monoxide analyzer. Ambient COconcentration was mornitored by an atmospheric environment emergency monitoring vehicle(TH-2000). After excluding the participants with missing data, a total of2836adults wereincluded in the analysis.Results:(1) the ambient CO levels in Hankou ditrict (mean±SD,1.01±0.52ppm) was higherthan that in Hanyang district (mean±SD,0.86±0.43ppm, p <0.05) in the summer;(2) Afteradjust for gender, smoking status, passive smoking status, height and age, eCO levels amongthe participants living in Hankou district was higher than that in Hanyang district;(3) thevalue of eCO is a better indicator to assess the smoking status of the participants (Currentsmoking=1, the others=0). the threhold levels of eCO were12.5ppm for the participants fromthe Hankou district and7.5ppm for the participants from the Hanyang district. Thesensitivities for a person who will be a current smoker were0.774(the specificity was0.737)for the participants from the Hankou district and0.640(the specificity was0.892) for theparticipants from the Hanyang district. Conclusion: eCO levels of Wuhan adult residents were affected by many factors.
