ObjectivesThere are two main goals in this paper: building the3D finite element model ofelbow joint and forearms for adults, researching on the size and distribution of radialhead stress transmission in different levels of injuries, locations in forearms andflexion ranges of elbow joints.MethodsBased on imagery data obtained by CT scanner and related processing software(Mimics10.01, Hypermesh10.0, LS-DYN971),3D finite element models for elbowjoint and forearms in different locations are built and evaluated in this paper.Meanwhile, Hypermesh10.0is used to generate the3D finite element model of radialhead in different levels of injuries. Additionally, the changes of stress transmission arecalculated through stress loading method in different levels of injuries, locations inforearms and flexion ranges of elbow joints.Results1. A finite element model of adult elbow joints and forearms was successfully builtand its effectiveness was verified through stress loading experiments.2. Based on data obtained from stress loading experiments, the stress transmissiondominance of humeroradial joints in elbow joints was testified. The stresstransmission ability of the head radial decreased after injuries, while that of the lateralhumeroradial joints increased.Conclusions1. It is feasible to analyze orthopaedic biomechanics experiments through the construction of3D finite element model of adult elbow joint and forearms based onCT data.2. The radial head has significant effect on the stability of elbow joint. In order torecover the stability and integrity of elbow joint, the radial head should bereconstructed in clinical treatment.
