Atriplex repens belongs to Chenopodiaceae for a southern medicinal plant, the whole ofA. repens is used to have the functions of dehumidification, solid renal, detumescence, detoxification, etc. According to the literature at home and abroad, chemical constitutes andpharmacological activities of A. repens have never been reported previously. The chemicalcomposition of the A. repens have been studied by means of extraction, separation, purification and structure identification; compounds and crude extracts have evaluatedantibacterial and antitumor activities, so that the compounds could be found that has strongpharmacological activity, discover the antimicrobial, antitumor drugs and provide the basis forcomprehensive exploitation and utilization. In this paper, compounds from95%ethanol extract of A. repens were isolated by meansof silica gel column chromatography (CC), Sephadex LH-20, together with recrystallizationmethod and so on. Their structures were identified by their physical characteristics andspectral features, such as NMR, UV, IR, MS, etc.Twenty-four compounds were obtained from A. repens, involving five kinds of structuretypes: cinnamic acid amide derivatives (4), phenylalanine derivatives (3), phenolic acids (7),steroid (5), and the others (5). Compounds1–16、18–22were isolated from this genus for thefirst time, all compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. The antimicrobial activities of compounds1–22were studied, the results as follows:Cinnamic acid amide derivatives1–4had selective inhibitory activities against bacterias, andhad higher inhibitory activities against Escherichia coli; Phenylalanine derivatives5–7hadhigher inhibitory activities against Staphylococcus albus. The antitumor activities of ethanol extract, polarity parts, compounds5,7and9werestudied, we found that ethyl acetate extract showed weakly inhibitory activities against humanliver cancer cells BEL-7402; compounds5,7, and9showed inactive. The study on the chemical constituents and antimicrobial activities of the A. repens forthe first time. The study of chemical composition revealed that the alkaloids compoundscompounds (cinnamic acid amide derivatives and phenylalanine derivatives) were the maincompounds, followed by phenolic acid compounds, steroidal compounds and others. The study of antimicrobial activities showed that cinnamic acid amide derivatives andphenylalanine derivatives had higher inhibitory activities. A number of bioactive compoundscould provide basic data for exploring lead compounds of antimicrobial, antitumor drugs inthe active compounds of medicinal plant and their application.
