Objective The purpose of the study is to examine therelationships among p53gene polymorphisms, environmentalfactors, and low birth weight infants. Methods:A case-controlstudy was conducted to collect the data of mothers and new-borns, according to birth weight and gestational age, the in-fants were divided into healthy control group and low birthweight group (including preterm infants group and small forgestational age group). DNA from peripheral blood sampleswas examined by polymerase chain-restriction fragment lengthpolymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method to detect the two p53genepolymorphic situs p53codon72、 p53PIN3(rs1042522,rs17878362) and compared the three groups genotype andallele frequency distribution. Results:1.Multivariate un-conditional logistic regression analysis showed that theoccurrence of low birth weight infants were associated with fetal gender, maternal education level, prenatal care and placeof residence, and the regression coefficients were-0.710,1.055,0.825,-0.676,respectively.2.There was significant differencein the total distribution frequency of p53codon72situs(χ~2=19.182, P=0.001),but no association was detected betweenthe low birth weight group and the healthy control group inp53PIN3situs(χ~2=0.566,P=0.754).The distribution frequenciesof Pro/Pro genotype in p53codon72situs in preterm infantsgroup and small for gestational age group were significantlyhigher than those in normal birth weight infants group, individuals with the homozygous Pro/Pro genotype hadincreased risk of low birth weight[(OR=2.317,95%CI:1.290~4.162,p=0.002),(OR=2.805,95%CI:1.599~4.919,P=0.000)].Conclusion: Genetic and environmental factors and theirinteractions plays an important role in the incidence of lowbirth weight infants. p53codon72situs polymorphism isrelated to low birth weight, and individuals allele for theProline varialt of codon72of the p53gene were at increasedrisk of low birth weight.
