Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the diagnostic value of3D sonographyin differentiation of benign and malignant calcified thyroid nodules. Methods: The3Dsonograms of98cases with133calcified thyroid nodules were reviewed in the study. These nodules were clarified as two categories: benign lesion and malignant lesionaccording to their pathologic results. Compare their sonographic appearances—volume ofthe nodule, the number of calcification in the nodule, the length of the biggest calcification, average number of unit volume, the distribution types of calcification, the density ofcalciticaton, the morphological types of calcification in these two groups. Results: Thenumber of calcification in the nodule, the length of the biggest calcification, averagenumber of unit volume, the distribution types of calcification, the density of calciticaton, the morphological types of calcification characteristics have statistical significancebetween benign thyroid nodule and maligant thyroid nodule(P<0.05). The number ofcalcification in nodule has no statistical significance between benign thyroid nodule andmaligant thyroid nodule(P>0.05). The proportion of point-like calcification type ishighest in benign group and maligant group (59.3%、85.1%). The incidence in maligantgroup is higher than incidence in benign groups, and the differences between the twogroups was statistically significant (P<0.05). The calcification distribution types inbenign group are mainly mixed type (45.3%) and marginal type (45.3%), the distributiontypes in maligant group is mainly the central type (44.7%). The incidence ofmicrocalcification in maligant groups(85.1%) is higher than it in benign group(59.3%).Conclusions: Three-dimensional sonography can make quantitative analysis about aboveindexs of calcified thyroid nodules. And it has clinical significance in distinguishingbenign and maligant thyroid nodules.
