ObjectiveTo explore the aetiology and clinical features of virus meningitis/encephalitis(VME).Methods62cases of children suffered from viral meningitis/encephalitis and admittedto the department of pediatrics of Fujian provincial hospital during June to Novemberof2011were studied. On the basis of the results of virus isolation by the method ofmolecular biology, the cases were divided into2groups: EVME (n=24)andnon-EVME(n=38). The EVME and non-EVME were divided into treatment groupand control group again by the method of treatment. The clinical features and theoutcomes of treatment were studied by retrospective analysis.ResultssEVME in the62cases of VME were mainly infected by ECHO30(22cases),and three of them were mixed-infected by ECHO30and Cox B. The others wasECHO6(1case) and ECHO14(1case). Among EVME and non-EVME, the age ofonset was mainly distributed in preschool children(P<0.05), and there was a highermorbidity in male than female(P<0.05), with a moderate fever(P<0.05). Theincidence rate of preheadache of EVME was higher than that of non-EVME(P<0.05).There was no statistical difference of concomitant gastrointestinal and respiratorysymptoms between the two groups (P>0.05). And no patients in severe condition inEVME but eight cases in non-EVME(P<0.01). The abnormal rate of MRI of brain inEVME is higher than that of non-EVME(P<0.05). The level of CRP in EVME was much higher than that of non-EVME (P<0.0001). No significant difference onremission time of fever, headache and hospitalization between the treatment groupand control group in EVME(P>0.05). But there was much shorter in treatment groupwith non-EVME than the control group.(P <0.05). There was no significantdifference in curative effect between treatment group and control group amongEVME and non-EVME (P>0.05).ConclusionECHO30was the main pathogenic of EVME. There was a higher morbidity inmales and preschool ages, with a moderate fever.Brain MRI showed meninges involved but no damage found in parenchyma.EV infection might triggered a increase level of CRP.The hormone therapy maybe an unnecessary therpy for the patient with EVME.
