To protect the environment and make the development of society can be sustained, develop low-carbon economy with low pollution, low emission, low-power is imminent. As a green energy, electrical energy is widely used. Smart grid gradually developed towards the direction of safe, reliable and efficient, in the near future, its likely to be a new effective way of slow down a warming climate and energy conservation and emission reduction.Smart meters as an important part of the smart grid, its performance of reliability and stability, accuracy of measurement, and no matter the interests of residents or the electricity power sector are closely related.Based on the above background, this paper designed a set of single phase smart electric meter based on ZigBee technology, using RN8209G as energy metering chip, the CPU use ATMEL company’s Atmega32microcontroller, has realized automatic detection, measurement, and storage to power. And through the ZigBee wireless communication module, ARM terminal equipment connect with electricity detection module together, achieve parameter setting, electricity metering in stages, electricity curve display, and other functions.This paper have detailed descriptions on hardware and software design process of smart meters, and describes the function of each module. Smart meters communicate with PC through ZigBee wireless module, this paper also describes the basic knowledge and networking process of ZigBee wireless communication. ARM9+WinCE6.0is made of upper computer platform. Development tools using Microsoft VS2005, programming language is C#, complete the data receive and storage、parameter settings and other functions to the smart meters, and put into field tests, the basically completes the expected goal. In the end, some shortcomings and areas for improvement exists in this design are described in the article.
