Ship grounding is one of the ship accidents which is often occurred in the process of the marine transportation, it is referred to the accidents caused by ships running aground on restrictions which are the obstacles to the navigation, like the reefs, wrecks, shoal and so on, and eventually it will lead to the suspending or damage to the ship. And it will cause the ship hull damage, environmental pollution, lost lives and so on. According to relevant statistics, ship grounding has the greatest proportion in the ship accidents which cause the oil spill. In recent years, with the rapid development of the shipping industry, the waterway traffic has become increasingly busy, and the grounding risk of ships has increased evidently, especially for large crude oil carrier, LNG ship and chemical tanker. Therefore it is of great importance to make research on the ship grounding, it is not only good for people’s secularity on sea and preventing marine pollution, but also can present foundation for ships in crowd water transport area in terms of standardizing velocity and operation rules.As there is a lot of non-linear phenomena in the process of ship grounding, such as the large displacement and deformation of ship structures, the research of it is very complex. Now with the rapid development of the computer technology, more and more researchers are beginning to use the non-linear finite element method to make numerical simulation study on the ship grounding. Therefore, based on the previous research by other scholars, the structural damage in the process of ship grounding is researched in this article by ANSYS/LS-DYNA.Firstly, the concept and classification of the ship grounding and the background, status, method in the research of the ship grounding have been summarized in this article. The basic theory of the ship grounding, the relevant numerical simulation technology and modeling method have also been introduced simply. After finishing selecting the target ship and defining the grounding scenario and material parameters, the geometric model of the ship grounding has been established under the condition of the reasonable simplification of the ship structure. After the mesh generation and defining the solution parameters and output, the numerical simulation calculation about the effects of different grounding parameters(the ship of the reef, position, initial velocity, tonnage, calculation parameters) on the structure damage of the ship has been conauctea in the4th chapter of this article. After the numerical simulation calculation, the diagram of the damage of the ship, the curve of ship structure’s grounding energy and the grounding resistance can be obtained by importing the numerical computing results into the post-processing software LS-PrePost. Finally some effective conclusions can be found by the analysis and comparison of the above mentioned results.
