Evolution Of The Spatial Context Of Chengdu Old District Since1840And Contemporary Organic Construction Strategy

With the rapid development of China’s social economy and the escalation of population, the urban land is increasingly expanding. The old area of the city is confronted with a lot of problems, such as aging infrastructure, declining historical features and its cultural space bearing the development of the city is also nibbled by years. The cultural context of the city lost the soil of rooting and became a meaningless specimen. In the course of urbanization, the conflict between protection of the old city and city renewal is increasingly prominent and becomes the bottleneck of the city development.Chengdu is a famous cultural city with an urban construction history of more than2300years. As far back as the age of civilization enlightenment, it was the center of the ancient civilization around the upper Yangtze River. Since Zhangyi constructed Chengdu city by imitating Xianyang city, the townsite of Chengdu never changed during several times of construction. The streets and city texture of the old city are followed by now. The city has a stable historical and cultural spatial form.On the basis of the research of cultural context space of the old Chengdu city, this paper divided the city construction of old Chengdu city into four stages in line with two time axes, namely the modern one and the contemporary one. At the same time, this paper conducted an analysis on the spatial evolution of cultural context in old city of Chengdu by taking historical maps of different times as actual cases and combining the analysis of GIS data. This paper made every effort to find out the track of the spatial evolution of cultural context in old city of Chengdu and its value and significance to the modern city, sought for ways and methods of establishing cultural context space of the contemporary city. This paper tried to continue original cultural context space of the old Chengdu city during the city-refreshing and provide practical significance for the current city development, so that Chengdu, as a famous historical city, could follow the path of sustainable development.
