Along with the rapid development of the civil engineering construction, composite foundation treatment technology has been widely used in engineering application. Because of the geological conditions and complicated variety of gravel pile composite foundation, currently the gravel pile composite foundation for theoretical and experimental research is still in the development stage.Based on the freeway under construction from Suining to Xichong, in this thesis author analyzes the settlement and stability of gravel piles foundation by means of site survey and numerical simulation. The main contents and results are as follows:(1) This paper introduces the basic concepts of soft ground, the nature of projects and the development of composite foundation status etc., that deal with the purpose and significance of soft ground. and its definition and composition, failure mode, deformation rules and working mechanism are summarized.(2) Discusses the gravel pile composite foundation bearing mechanism, the foundation bearing capacity and settlement of the theory.(3) Elaborate systematically the engineering geological conditions of the freeway from Suining to Xichong which is under construction.(4) Based on the application of PLAXIS-a certain professional geotechnical software, this paper establishes a model. The results of typical operating point simulation ale similar to the monitoring data, it shows that the method of using PLAXIS to simulate the settlement process is reasonable.(5) Using the PLAXIS software, a simulation model of the gravel pile composite foundation was established to analyse the stability of the composite foundation and the pile-soil stress ratio. The results showed that changing the radius and the space of the gravel pile has significant effect on the settlement and pile-soil stress ratio, but a little influence on stability of embankment.
