Wind and solar power system can effectively solve the problem of energy shortages, protect ourenvironment, and promote sustainable economic development. For the reason of seasonalcharacteristic of solar and wind, a single generation method not only requires considerable powerstorage device, but also has low system reliability. Based on the highly complementarycharacteristic of wind and solar energy in terms of time and geographical, wind and solar powertechnology can be very cost-effective to the use of wind and solar energy. And the generationsystem can be the power supply system of rural place without grid, communication stations, andisolated islands.This paper studies the application of wind and solar power technology in the lighting project.Firstly, the paper discusses the wind turbines and photovoltaic panel output characteristic, thebattery array and micro-grid technology. Secondly, the paper discusses the system configuration andLED drive. In order to meet the requirements of power system reliability, wind and solar streetlighting system need to configure the appropriate battery capacity, output power of solar panels andwind generator. At last, depending on the system configuration and performance requirements, thepaper designs a type of wind and solar street lighting controller. The controller is mainly composedof forward type dc-dc converter and driver chip SG3525which has two channel complementaryPWM signal. The MCU controls wind and solar dc-dc converter to charge the battery arrayintelligently. At night, the battery drives the LED lights working at half-power supply mode orfull-power supply mode. Also, the controller could display the system working parameters andpower supply mode on the LCD, communicate with PC through its USART.The paper completes the hardware and software design, and tests the system performance andreliability, analysis the test waveform and data. Experimental results show that this controller can bewell applied in the lighting project.
