Accurate finite element model is very important to structure optimization design, response analysis and damage identification. Usually, structure finite element model is established according to the blueprint and standard, then the geometry, material and boundary conditions of the structure are assumed and simplified, so that the deviation between the calculation of the structure finite element model and the measured response of the structure is exist inevitably. Finite element model updating is a iterative optimized process by updating the model design parameters step by step, and the calculation is as close as possible to the measured response. Throughout the advantages and disadvantages of every model updating method, the response surface method is more efficient, simple and converges faster, therefore it can serve as the benchmark model for further damage identification and condition assessment of the frame structure.Firstly, the paper introduces the theory, steps and the research status of several widely applied element model update methods, then emphatically introduces the theory of finite element model method based on response surface, and introduces it to frame structure’s finite element updating. Secondly, the method is applied to the concrete column’s numerical simulation by reducing elastic modulus of the component to simulate the damage, The deviation between the updated frequencies and the measured frequencies is less than1%, which complete the updating of the numerical simulation examples.Further, the approach is illustrated for a shaking table test model of a12-storey reinforced concrete frame and a3-storey reinforced concrete frame affected by the earthquake by experiments designing, parameter screening, response surface fitting, model accuracy inspection and parameter optimization., which using the shaking table test data and field pulsation test data respectively. The frequencies from the updated model are in good agreement with the identified frequencies, and the deviation is less than5%. It also shows that the updated finite element model can be the benchmark model to analysis the dynastic property of structure more accurately.
