It showed the distribution of active and passive earth pressure was non-linear, also it was influenced by the different displacement and movement mode, such as translation, rotation about base and rotation about top by analyzing the existing tests. The above phenomenons couldn’t be explained by the traditional theory, Rankine’s or Colomb’s solution, so that was necessary to find a new theory to explain the non-linear distribution phenomenon and to consider the influence of the displacement and movement mode. It was necessary to research the soil arching effect theory which could explain above phenomenon. The existing theories of soil arching mostly concentrated the earth pressures of sandy soil arching and translation mode, which was available for cohesive soil backfill, the other movement modes, and the effect of existing basement. Therefore, it is necessary for studying the soil arching effects theory under some complex conditions. In this dissertation, the earth pressure behind the retaining wall considering the soil arching effects were researched on basis of the studies avaiable. The main original work was expressed as follows:1、According to the existing papers, the shape of arch of soil arching was assumed the catenary, circular, parabolic, which above three shapes were closed the fact and the circular was more practical.2、Based on the assumption of circular arch, the coefficient lateral earth pressure of clayey backfill which was the lateral earth pressure divided by the vertical stress were given. According to above coefficient lateral earth pressure, the crack considering the soil arching effect were derived.3、The transferred solution of the coefficient lateral earth pressure of clayey backfill was given, then using the horizontal differential element method, the vertical stress respectively considering the stress state and forces equilibrium were derived, then, the formulas of distribution of active earth pressure under clayey backfill, total active earth pressure and the height of application of total earth pressure were given.4、For calculating the distribution of the active earth pressure under different translational displacement mode, using the transferred solution of coefficient lateral active earth pressure and coefficient of active interlayer friction pressure, the distribution of active earth pressure considering the different movement mode was given, also the corresponding the total earth pressure and height of application of total earth pressure were derived.5、The active earth pressure of retaining wall adjacent to existing basements were researched by analyzing the deformation trends, which the upper soil slid along two wall, and lower soil slid along the soil wedge. The distribution of active earth pressure behind the retaining wall existing the ex, total earth pressure and height of application of total earth pressure were given.6、The active earth pressure and passive earth pressure were basic information for designing the retaining wall, and it was necessary for establishing a unified solution of active earth pressure and passive earth pressure. Firstly, the unified coefficient of earth pressure under active state and passive state was analyzed. Then, using the horizontal differential element method, the unified theory of retaining wall considering the soil arching effects both active earth pressure and passive earth pressure was given.
