The sight-axis alignment can be accomplished by the fast acquisition operation between two laser communication terminals, which is the premise of establishing a free-space optical communication link. Especially for the near earth surface laser communication, due to occlusion and other reasons, these would break the transmission of laser and break the communication as well. This requires the communication terminals have to capture each other in a fast, efficient and stable way. So the fast acquisition technique is one of technologies in space laser communication.According to the near earth surface laser communication of army battlefield environment (electromagnetic interference or radio communication interruption), this paper presents a new idea of acquisition, namely using the long beacon light instead of the circular beacon light and using need one-dimensional scanning in horizontal direction instead of the original of two-dimensional scanning. So it is significant to improve the acquisition probability and reduce the acquisition time. Firstly, on the basis of the analysis of the traditional capturing methods, the paper presents this new idea of fast acquisition. Secondly, the capturing algorithm models were established, such as, the power model of the acquisition link, scanning model and failure probability model. And the optimization analysis for the parameters of the capturing unit has been carried out using the software of MATLAB. Finally, according to the theoretical analysis, an experimental system of fast acquisition have been designed and built. And the experiment have been researched, the performance indicators from the experiment, such as the acquisition probability and time, were much higher than traditional acquisition method.Through the theoretical calculations and experiments can verify the feasibility and quickness of the new ideas. The method proposed by this paper is very important for using the laser communication terminals.
