Supported by the key project entitled "Fundamental research on design and manufacture of multi-scale micro-channel reactor for hydrogen production from alcohols" from National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No.59030005), and by the project entitled "Fundamental research on design and manufacture of micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays for hydrogen production from alcohols" from Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China (Grant No.20110101110011), we have carried out some research on the performance of heat transfer and flow characteristics in the micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays (MPFAR) for hydrogen production from alcohols. Firstly, a novel micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays for hydrogen production was designed and the manufacturing systems based on the micro thixo-forming processing was developed to fabricate the micro-pin-fin arrays. Secondly, the heat transfer performance in the MPFAR was studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and new heat transfer correlation accounting for the effect of tip clearance was developed. Then the flow characteristics performance was also studied and new friction factor correlation was developed. Finally, a measure and control system based on LabVIEW software was developed and a series of experiments was carried out to study the heat transfer and flow characteristics performance in the MPFAR.In Chapter1, the background and significance of this research was introduced. Then, the current research situation about the research on the heat transfer and flow characteristics performance in micro-reactor was expatiated, and the research contents of the thesis were proposed.In Chapter2, a novel micro-reactor with micro-pin-fin arrays for hydrogen production form alcohols was designed. Then, the manufacturing systems based on the micro thixo-forming processing was developed to fabricate the micro-pin-fin arrays.In Chapter3, the MPFAR was simplified and modeled in ANSYS and the computational model of the MPFAR was obtained. Then, the heat transfer performance in the MPFAR was studied and discussed. Finally, a new heat transfer correlation accounting for the effect of tip clearance was developed.In Chapter4, based on the computational model of the MPFAR obtained in Chapter3, the flow characteristics performance was studied and discussed. Then, a new friction factor correlation accounting for the effect of tip clearance was developed.In Chapter5, the experimental program on the study of the heat transfer and flow characteristic performance in the MPFAR was designed and a measure and control system for the MPFAR was designed base on virtual instrument and LabVIEW software. Then, a series of experiments was carried out to study the heat transfer and flow characteristics performance and validate the new heat transfer and friction factor correlations.In Chapter6, the chief work of this thesis was summarized, and the future research objects were presented.
