Preloading drainage consolidation method is an effective way for the treatment of soft soil foundation, which is extensively used in the construction of yards, roads, ports, dams and airports recently. Based on the characteristics of this method, soft soil will cause considerable deformation under loading. The consolidation deformation is easy to be controlled because of its long duration and slow development of soil deformation; while the transient deformation will cause accidents if not be taken seriously because of its short duration and rapid development of soil deformation, so there is a need to be furtherly researched.Firstly, reviewing the present research situation about the transient deformation, including:elastic method, numerical analysis and the empirical prediction.Then, according to the "mobilisable strength" proposed by Bolton and other scholars, the plasticity theory of soil, and the stress-strain relationship from three triaxial test, the MSD method will be presented, which is applicable to the calculation of transient deformation under loading.Finally, the MSD method will be validated combining with a certain engineering. The results show that the MSD method is effective, credible, and more convenient and accurate comparing with other methods.
