In the process of production, material level is always a very important control parameter. With more and more complicated process appearing in industrial production, traditional level measurements lost the ability of meeting some requirements in high-end manufacturing process gradually. Fortunately, new intelligent instrument such as ultrasonic level measurement has appeared to make up for this shortage today. Based on this background, the theory and the research in hardware and software design of ultrasonic level measurement will be introduced in the paper.In the part of system function structure, the MSP430low-power dissipation chip is used as main control unit in measurement system. Due to its abundant chip resources, some functions are accomplished easily such as modulation and amplification of the40kHz ultrasonic frequency, amplification and capture of the echo signal, output of4-20mA current signal, LCD local display, key input, HART communication and remote data download and upload.In hardware circuit design, it is divided as three parts which are receiving circuit, driving circuit and master control circuit due to the size and function of the instrument. To achieve the optimization and perfection, the original circuit is changed and improved again and again. And finally, it is externalized in Protel. Software program design is accomplished on IAR development environment by C language. Through modular design concept, the independence and stability of the function modules in each running cycle can be ensured. From the experimental result, the measurement system can not only conform to the relevant instrument performance but also have very good reliability.This research can not only improve the development of science and technology in the domestic correlation field, but also can bring certain reference for the similar product research and development and promote the development of ultrasonic level measurement effectively.
