Zhongshan Avenue Bus Rapid Transit System is located in Tianhe Road-ZhongshanAvenue-Huangpu Road E. corridor, which is one of the main bus corridors in the city centerof Guangzhou. Before BRT corridor was built, buses and social vehicles at ZhongshanAvenue are in larger quantities, and interfere with each other.Along the road nearTianhecheng,Gangding and Huajingxincheng areas, traffic problems were obvious. In theplanning and design stage, Zhongshan Avenue BRT system is positioned as extension andsupplement of regular bus and the subway system. Through the innovative use of "dedicatedlanes&flexible line" system mode, and by using competitive mechanisms for systemmanagement and operations, this BRT system operate31BRT lines, which composed by theseven operating companies and responsible for three operating groups. In February2010,itformally completed and put into use. In order to better assess Zhongshan Avenue BRTsystem’s actual operating results, and provide lessons learned and references for othersystems in planning, designing and building process, the study on Zhongshan Avenue BRTsystem evaluate the effectiveness the actual operation, analyze and summarize the design andoperational management mode. The study uses the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis methods.Itcompares traffic characteristics and indicators, operational data, economic and social benefitsand other contents. Put the rapid transit system’s actual operating results into objectiveconclusions and give suggestions and improvements for the engineering and operatingproblems existing in the project. This article summarizes the BRT system ‘s developing trendin China and provide experiences for other BRT system’s planning and construction.
