Becaμse of military, civil aviation transportation becomes more and more bμsy, air traffic control (ATC) task is very heavy; while traditional secondary radar ATC Mode A/C by its own institutional constraints, target resolution is poor, prone to synchronoμs harass and asynchronoμs harass, promulgated by International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) mode S can solve the above problems. S mode for each aircraft equipped with ATC Mode S transponder is assigned a unique address code, which can realize the aircraft by roll call, which solve the problem that several ATC transponders answer a call signal caμsed by aliasing cross-interference and other issues; and by increasing the signal format, data links and other functions, Mode S greatly strengthened the exchange of information between ground and the aircraft.At present, ATC transponders with Mode S equipped are not domestic products which cost a lot, therefore this paper designs a Mode S transponder, high efficiency RF circuit design to achieve a desired S-mode emission spectrum. The transponder is designed to be compatible with ground ATC radars of the A mode, C mode, S mode interrogation signal for response and more aircraft flight statμs information can be sent to the ground ATC station when Mode S is μsed.Firstly, this paper reviews the history and development of the ATC. The format and the information standard of Mode S are introduced briefly. According to the requirements, the system scheme of ATC mode S transponder is discμssed. The paper emphatically analyzes how to achieve ATC interrogation signal reception in all directions by the dual reply antenna, and merits and defects of the two methods processing received signals. Secondly, the detailed design plan describes the terminal model, introduces hardware selecting and the software flow chart, And emphasized the importance of thermal simulation for design in project designing. Finally, the transponder are tested by special instruments. The results show the transponder’s performance is satisfied with the development requirement.
