Intelligent Buildings are developing rapidly as a trend, and its need for high quality power become more and more important. As one important index of power quality, harmonic brings some trouble for the automation system of the Intelligent Buildings. Electrical accidents and communication accidents emerge one by one. So, harmonic is a problem needed to be solved urgently. Now, Passive Filter can’t meet the requirement of filtering, and new technology of filtering is also put off. The characteristics of the Intelligent Buildings and harmonic suppression are studied in this paper to find the proper measure.The harmonic characteristics of load in Intelligent Buildings are analyzed in the first part of this paper. The kinds of the single-phase loads is mutiple and produce different frequency harmonics. Although the amplitude of the harmonic is low, it becomes higher through overlay. On the contray, the three-phase loads can produce more harmonics with less quantity. The characteristics of transformer,fans,pumps and the whole power system are analyzed, then the unbalanced three-phase system is analyzed,too. All the above is prepared for the harmonic suppression.The harmness of harmonics in Intelligent Buildings is summarized in the second part of the paper. Some electric power is also wasted with the harmonic, so, harmonic suppression is significant for power-saving.The harmonic prevention and control measures are put off in the third part of the paper. First, the prevention measures are put off in electrical design. Second, some measures for harmonic suppression are compared for choosing the best one which is feasible and economical; At last, the harmonic control measure of an office building is simulated with PSCAD and is veryfied effective. It provids a reference for the future work on harmonic suppression.
