With the post-industrial era, information technology, globalization as the dominant urban functions, people’s lifestyle and a dramatic change in consumer attitudes, etc., the old model can’t meet the functional area of modern urban development. With the "mixed development" theory proposed that a new urban form appeared, the concept of urban complex was formally proposed. Practice shows that the urban complex as an organic combination of urban functions, conducive to resolving the tensions of urban land resources, traffic congestion, environmental degradation, urban expansion and other issues also have some role in the relaxation of the urban complex as a sustainable, healthier growth pattern, being more and more attention. Currently China is in the stage of rapid urbanization stage, along with the urban complex also a emerging in a large areas, and become a very important part of city life.In this paper, on the basis of existing research on urban complex, illustrates the concept of urban complex, analyzes its characteristic; reviewing its history background, the reasons for the formation of urban complex are summarized from several aspects, proposed the development trend of the urban complex; site selection and planning of urban complex, the functional organization, traffic flow, public space, landscape sketch, architectural shape elements for analysis, and put forward the planning and design requirements; through the understanding of the selected typical cases, in studying the different location of wuhan city complex, its different design methods; summarizes and compares the similarities and differences of different location of wuhan city complex; at last, prospects the development prospect of the urban complex.
