Compared with the traditional propellers, maneuverability and dynamic characteristics ofpodded propulsors is much more better, noise and vibration characteristics improved, and itdevelops very rapidly. At present, podded propulsors apply to all kinds of ships, offshoreplatforms and other civil and military vessels. In this thesis, A theoretical research on this newtype of propulsion is carried on, in which the structure of podded propulsor is optimized andits hydrodynamic performance is calculated. In the process,ANSYS ICEM CFD, FLUENT,AUTO CAD, TECPLOT and ORIGIN has been used.During the FLUENT calculation, RNG k-ε turbulence model is used and steadyhydrodynamic performance of podded propulsor is calculated. The thrust coefficient andtorque coefficient at different advance coefficients are obtained, thus the open waterperformance curve are drawn. Through the comparison with experimental value, the error iswithin acceptable range and good reliability of theoretic calculation method adopted in thispaper is proved. At the same time, the pressure distribution and velocity distribution of eachpart of podded propulsor are analyzed in detail.Structure optimization proceeds on the basis of podded propulsor, a fin is installed in thedifferent position at the bottom of the pod and the unsteady hydrodynamic performance iscalculated. Compared with the thrust coefficient, torque coefficient, the system efficiency andthe lateral force of ordinary podded propulsor, the influence of different location of the fin onthe propulsor is discussed.After selecting the fin position, the structure of the podded propulsor is further optimized.The installation angle of fin is adjusted to improve hydrodynamic performance of propulsor.After calculation, curves of system thrust, system efficiency and lateral force are drawn, andthe hydrodynamic performance under different installation angle is compared. The pressuredistribution of propeller disk and strut and the path lines near fin are analyzed. And the impactof fin under different installation angles on hydrodynamic performance of propulsor isanalyzed.
