The catamaran planing craft is well-received by the field of naval architecture due to it’sunique hull structure and the channel drag reduction effect which is different to theconventional planing craft. For a long time, the hull design and selection research of thecatamaran planing craft is mainly carried out by means of model tank tests and empiricalformulas summaried by model tests, there always be a big difficulty in optimizing the hulltype and forecasting its hydrodynamic performance through the numerical predicting method.In recent years, with the rapid development of computer calculation ability, some mature CFDmethods began to play an important role in the ship hydrodynamic performance study field,which became a kind of auxiliary means in the hydrodynamic performance test research. Inthis paper, we mainly optimize and predict the catamaran planing craft’s hydrodynamicperformance.First of all, we learned two predicting methods to predict the hydrodynamic performanceof the3d planing craft: the single degree of freedom movement method based on the dynamicgrid technology and the ordinary drainage type ship’s numerical simulation method, thenpredicted the planing craft’s hydrodynamic performance at the high speed respectively, andcompared the calculative result with the experimental value, it turns out that, the single degreeof freedom movement method based on the dynamic grid technology can simulate theresistance performance of the planing craft better.Secondly, based on the related data of the literature, we designed the3d model of thecatamaran planing craft by using the CAD, GAMBIT and CATIA software, adopted theSavitsky method and the Murry method to estimate catamaran planning craft’s runningattitude respectively, and carried out the numerical calculation to the catamaran planing craft’shydrodynamic performance by using the single degree of freedom movement method basedon the dynamic grid technology above, then contrast the calculation to the experimental valueof a test hull, we found that the result by the Savitsky method have the same trend with theexperimental value, which shows that combining the dynamic grid technology and theSavitsky method can simulate the resistance performance well, which provided a feasiblenumerical research method for the type selection of the hull.Finally, the paper researched on the catamaran planing craft’s optimization design, this paper mainly studies these pivotal elements: the channel relative width、the channel relativeheight and the channel top deadrise angle, the relative width of sheet’s knuckle line、thesheet’s deadrise angle and the changing of the position of the center of gravity, the shape ofthe transverse cross-sectional plane and the embedded form of the channel, from which weobtained some beneficial conclusions providing certain reference for selection research to thetype of the catamaran planing craft.
