In recent years, commercial softwares such as Fluent in CFD show more and moredisadvantages, such as valuable costs, limited ability of parameter modification, slowlydevelopment of new models and unsatisfactory computational efficiency. As a new generalCFD platform,OpenFOAM is developed and compiled by C++.Its characters include opensource, diversity of pre-and post-processing ports&utilities, stable foundation and excellentparallelly computation ability.Researchers could develop customized solvers freely to studyspecific topics, which enhances their research more exhaustive and motivated. Therefore, moreand more researchers in ship hydrodynamics use and develop it.Content is as follows:(1)Based on OpenFOAM,2D NACA0012’s drag and lift is caculated and compared withthe test data.It verifys its accuracy.(2)Based on OpenFOAM and Fluent,3D SUBOFF bare and full-appendages submarines’resistances under different speeds are predicted.Comparing them with DARPA experimentaldata, the calculating accuracy and algorithm are evaluated.(3)The OpenFOAM implemented methods,handling,pre-and post-processing,parallelcomputation are evaluated, especially, the postprocessing software ParaView.(4)The GUI extension HELYXos and its performance are evaluated. The process ofOpenFOAM solver’s customized development is summarized,“Hello Huster” is compiled asan example. In sum,OpenFOAM will keep pace with Fluent soon in ship hydrodynamics.Inpresent,OpenFOAM even has a better performance in some functions than the latter.Eventhough its stand solvers need more improvements,OpenFOAM is one of the best choices forresearchers who prefer coding to develop solvers that have lower cost, faster convergencerate, higher calculating accuracy and are optimized for some specific questions.
