Many countries started to build highways after the first highway in the world had beenbuilt in Germany, highways have started to be built in China in80’s of20century. Since1988to1996, under the direction of the system plan of “five vertical and seven horizontal” trunknational highways, highways in our country have achieved sustained, rapid and orderlydevelopment. The traffic mileage of highways in our country has come up to96thousand kmat the end of2012. In recent years, the continuous and high-speed growth of nationaleconomy results in the ineffective traffic capacity and low service level of highways whichare constructed in early age, which makes the superiority that fast driving speed of highwayscan not be a good play. In order to give full play to the ability to move quickly of highwaysand maintain the high quality level of highway service, expanding the highway is becomingnecessary.This paper firstly analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of different expansionmethods for highways, summarizes the advantages, disadvantages and all applicable cases ofsix application methods in highway expansion period.And on this basis, the organization of traffic flow in highway expansion period is optimized as a whole from point, line and surface level respectively,presenting the scheme of the organization of traffic flow combined with engineering projects, in the hope of better effects of traffic flow organization.The results of this paper can provide studies on the organization methods of traffic flowin highway expansion period in our country with certain theory guidance and technologysupport.
