In recent years, because of the global energy shortage and rapidly rising prices ofraw materials, the engineering department has been applying the strucural optimiaztiondesign to meet the engineering requirements. As the conceptual design, topologyoptimization method lays the basis for the subsequent designs. Therefore, the optimaltopology structure should be designed at the initial stage.Structural topology design process is similar to biological adaptive growth.Through receiving external stimuli and inner demand, organisms can regulate their ownstructures to adapt to the external environment and meet the inner demand. Structuraltopology optimization method based on biological adaptive growth mechanism couldoptimize the object structure to meet engineering requirements, and it would be dividedinto two specific methods in this paper: SKO method and the adaptive growth method. These two methods as a rising star of topology optimization have great aaplicationprospects. This paper mainly focuses on the following aspects: In order to avoid the localminimum during the optimization iterative process based on the SKO technique, acontinuous step-up reference stress criterion is proposed. The reference stress can beautomatically changed by the current iterative state, which can solve the materialaccumulation. The design parameters of the method are studied, and the validity of theproposed method is given by several typical design examples. This method can lay thefoundation for the subsequent topology optimization. This SKO method was applied tothe three–dimensional structure, and the display method of the optimization results wasdetermined. This paper studies the minimum-size constraints and the draw directionconstraints respectively, which were added into SKO method by filtering stress, and theselection priciples of parameters was studied and determined. The validity of theproposed method is given by several typical design examples. In order to avoid theasymmetric results during optimizing the symmetric model based on the adaptivegrowth technology which can give rise to error accumulation, symmetry constraintsadaptive growth method have been proposed. The general symmetry formula can beused for plate and shell structures both of2Ds and3Ds. The adaptive growth technologyis extended in the layout design of stiffener plates of box formation. This paper studies the layout design of the ground structure and the method of selecting the seed line togrow ribs. The results of typical design examples showed that the adaptive growthtechnology is suitable in the design of stiffener plates of box formation.
