The fabricating cost decline of composite materials has promoted its andrelated technologies’ widespread application in aerospace engineering. Compositematerials not only achieve its rapid increase in proportion, but also begin to transferfrom small component to main bearing structure, such as wings and fuselage. Boxstructure is one of the most important bearing structures in airplanes. The study onmechanical performance of composite box structures is essential to compositematerials’ application in airplane structures. Box structure is mainly consisted ofvarious thin-walled structures, which may lose stability before their failure loads,finally leading to structure damage in advance. Stability research is crucial tofurther analysis on mechanical performances of box structures. This paper studiesbehaviors of a simplified composite box structure, under certain torsion load andbending load.First of all, finite element modeling was constructed for box structures, basedon its structural and force characteristics; used linear solver to do static strengthanalysis on target structure under torsion load; analyzed the load carrying capacityand instability of the box structure with linear solver and nonlinear solverrespectively. According to the software results, we can know when and where thetarget structure will occur initial instability, as well as the performance anddeformation of its typical constituent members.Then static strength test was constructed for the box structure, examined itsmechanical behaviors under torsion load and limit bending load, determined itsstrength, instability properties and failure modes, until the target structure wasdamaged.Finally, comparison the experimental with simulation and data analysis.In this paper, numerical simulations and test are used to analyze the staticstrength of a box structure, and to verify its structural weakness. The results canprovide a reference for future structural design and improvement.
