Biodiesel as a renewable alternative energy is of widespread concern. However thefeedstock of biodiesel can be from different materials, which resulting composition andproperties’ differences. These differences may lead to distinct combustion and emission. In this research, three biodiesels and petroleum diesel was used to analyze the combustioncharacteristics and emission.Firstly, to ensure the quality, measurement system has been investigated anddeveloped carefully. The indicator diagram measurement system was detailed documentedwith key points to eliminated errors, while the particle measurement system wasrigorously setup according the devices specification. Then the production of fuels used inthis research was introduced, coming with the composition, properties analysis. Finally, detailed combustion characteristics was gained through indicator diagram and heat releaseprofile. The corresponding emissions was analyzed and reasoned with fuel compositions. The composition results differ among biodiesels. Soybean biodiesel and waste-cooking-oil biodiesel are alike while Chinese-tallow biodiesel contains more unsaturatedfatty acid methyl ester then the other two. The heating values of the biodiesels are verysimilar while the cetane numbers vary due to the composition. Cetane numbers ofSoybean biodiesel and waste-cooking-oil biodiesel is very close to that of diesel, whileChinese-tallow biodiesel comes with a low value. he iodiesel’s ulk modulus isevidently higher than petroleum diesel, which will result in injection advancement, andChinese-tallow biodiesel gets the highest result. From cetane number and bulk modulusresults it can be concluded that Chinese-tallow biodiesel gets a longest ignition delay, which will come with highest combustion pressure and nitric oxide emission. Thisconclusion was supported by the experiment results. And the particle emission resultsshow biodiesel tend to produce less particle mass than petroleum diesel, while the massdistribution is similar with that of diesel.
