Traditionally, it was regarded that steel frames with welded beam-column joint hadexcellent seismic behavior. However, during the Northridge earthquake in1994and Kobeearthquake in1995, a large number of steel moment-resisting frames experienced brittlefractures at beam-column joints. The new type joints have been becoming the hot researchsubjects gradually in recent years. The main way to improve joints is cutting the beam with aslot. Some professors also propose a kind of joint using frictional slipping damper. TomokazuYoshioka and Masamichi Ohkubo, professors in Japan, proposed a kind of new beam-columnjoint which consists of a narrow vertical slot that cuts the beam bottom flange and the boltedfrictional slipping damper which connects the beam bottom flange cut. This paper drawslessons from the research approaches of some scholars on the basis of existing researchresults. The seismic behavior of the new joints and the new steel frames using new joints aresystematically analyzed and researched by using the theoretical analysis and nonlinear FEM.Seismic behavior of the new joints and the traditional joints are also compared in this paper inorder to obtain some good suggestion that are important to design and construction of thenew joint in steel frame.Firstly, the detail of the new joint was introduced. Then the experiment of the new jointwas simulated by ANSYS. It proves that ANSYS could excellent simulate the experiment ofthe new joint.Secondly, the influence of the friction coefficient of the beam bottom flange and thesliding plates, the width of the slot, the distance from the slot to the column flange, the heightof the slot and the tension of the high-tension bolts on the seismic behavior of the new jointsare analyzed by ANSYS. Seismic behavior of the new joints and the traditional joint are alsocompared. The results show that the ductility and the energy dissipation of the new joints aremuch better than the traditional joint. The initial stiffness of the new joints are slightly lowerthan the traditional joints, but the stiffness degradation of the traditional joints are moreserious than the new joints and the plastic hinge of the new joints appear in the slot far awayfrom the beam end region. Finally, seismic behavior of the new steel frame using the new beam-column joints and the traditional steel frame are compared. The results show that seismic behavior of the newjoints which in steel frame are almost the same as the component of new joint. It also provesthat the steel frame using new joints is practicable.
