The western region is the hardest hit of the earthquake in China, suffering a hugeloss in the previous earthquake. As one of the main structural forms of the westernrural buildings, adobe wall building was severely damaged during the earthquake. Alarge number of field investigation showed that lacking of structural measures is themain reason for the poor seismic performance of adobe walls building. Therefore,based on actual rural building and local building materials, which structural measuresshould be taken to improve the seismic performance of adobe walls buildingeffectively is the main concern of the article.Based on the full study of traditional adobe walls building’s damage features, thisarticle conducts a study which includes the following aspects:Based on the seismic weak link analysis of traditional adobe walls building, thepaper developed several seismic strengthening measures and suitable structural systemfor adobe walls building such as Situ Gypsum Adobe Walls Structure, Wooden SplintAdobe Walls Structure, Wooden Framework-Adobe Walls Structure and MasonryGypsum-Adobe Walls Structure. In addition, the paper proposed structural design ofthe typical western rural building.Combined with the new details of seismic design and building prototype, thispaper carried out the design, produced the models and conducted shaking table test. Itcould be seen through the four shaking table tests that tectonic measures can not onlyrestrict the loose adobe wall better but also enhance the overall seismic performanceand deformation capacity of the building. All the models did not collapse underearthquake of8degrees. Refer to the experimental data, this paper took comparativeanalysis of the four models through the parameters such as peak acceleration, dynamic characteristics, natural frequency, magnification factor of dynamic reaction anddisplacement angle. Then, we suggest improvements for all the inadequate.Finally, the article gave a brief introduction to the engineering practices ofresearch findings and focused on the construction technology and building costs of SituGypsum Adobe Walls building.As mentioned above, we can conclude that the detailsof seismic design in this article can improve the seismic performance of adobe wallsbuilding effectively and the ideas could be widely used in rural areas.
