Bridge, as an important part of transportation industry, its safety directly affects the proper functioning of highways and its importance are getting increasingly extensive social attention. Among bridges constructed in China, beam bridges are widely used with large amounts. As time flows and the traffic volume increases year by year, deterioration of structure performance of the bridge gradually occurs, and structure damage accumulation will endanger the safety of bridges. As a result, the securities of bridges have become the focus of the industry. In order to ensure the smooth traffic and stable development of economic, safety assessment and monitoring of the beam bridge is especially important. In this paper, based on the characteristics of beam bridges, safety evaluation index and safety assessment model of concrete beam bridges are analyzed. Thus, an evaluating system is developed which provides effective and scientific basis for the management and maintenance of beam bridges. Specifically, main research contents are as following:(1) Safety index system for concrete beam bridgeAccording to mechanical characteristics of different beam bridges, the safety index systems of different types of beam bridges are established, involved with the researching of important degree of safety control components and position in different types of beam bridges, safety influence factors of different beam bridges, as well as bridge safety monitoring technology.(2) Safety evaluation model for concrete beam bridgeBased on safety index system and technique condition evaluation model of beam bridge, combined with supporting engineering projects, a reasonable bridge safety assessment model is established by applying structural reliability evaluation method, AHP and fuzzy theory, which is easy to use, effective and practical.(3) Grading index and method on safety evaluation levels for concrete beam bridgeBased on the early waring principle, considering the influencing factors for bridge safety and durability, grading index and method for safety evaluation levels are established, and the reasonable range of safety evaluation indexes for beam bridges with different safety levels; (4) Safety evaluation system for concrete beam bridgeBy integrating safety evaluation techniques, monitoring techniques and bridge testing/monitoring system for data collection, data transmission, data analysis, a safety evaluation system of concrete beam bridges is developed with fast and efficient effective Data analysis and processing method;(5) An application example of safety evaluation for concrete beam bridgeTaking Huangpen Bridge in Zhejiang province as an example, the data collection, selection analysis and comprehensive evaluation of the system are introduced in detail, and then the safety evaluation level for the bridge is obtained, achieved good application effect.The research was funded by nation west traffic construction science and technology item of Ministry of Transportation (2005),’early warning technology of beam bridge safety’. Part of the research resultsin the project are quoted and used in the paper.
