Recently, the earthquake movement is in a new active period on earth, and many high intensity earthquakes have occurred in different region, which have led to heavy lives lost and property damage. Many tunnels have been built across the mountains in south of China, and have become important life line after earthquake because of its outstanding aseismatic performance. However, some different damage modes are also be found in this region due to its special feature of terrain and topograph. In order to avoid the hidden danger in running the tunnels passed by earthquake, it is necessary to prvovide a valid post-eqrthquake health diagnosis method. The normal using or reinforce or abandonment scheme can be also decided based on this method. After a complete investigation on failure modes, failue mechanism and health diagnosis methods, a research work has been performed in this paper. The main contents are as follows:(1) Considering the special feature of terrain and topograph in south of China, a four-level ranking method for post-earthquake health diagnosis of highway unnel is given. The index system for health diagnosis which including tunnel oortal failure, lining cracks, lining deformation, lining back cavity, lining spalling, water leaking, roads damage, power-supply system damage, drainage damage has been built and the allowed value to every index is determined by code and experience.(2) Analytic hierarchy process is introduced and improved to present a post-eqrthquake health diagnosis method for highway tunnel in south of China. The analytical hierarchy structure is estabfirstly lished and all weights of index are given.(3) Two methods to determine sectional safety factor are employed for the the damage modes of thinned concrete lining and back cavity of lining, which can provide basic data for relevant diagnosis index.
