Steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is a new lateral resisting element developed in the1970s, which serves to provide the lateral stiffness, shear strength and ductility of the structures. Studies show that the SPSW structure is excellent in the aspects of the good ductility and high energy dissipation capacity and has a widen application in ultra-high-rise building project due to its excellent ductility and seismic performance.Though domestic researches on SPSW and its applications started relatively late, they have developed rapidly in latest years, especially for SPSW with vertical stiffeners and SPSW with rectangular openings, which have been used in the Tianjin tower Project and Tianjin International Financial Conference Hotel Project respectively. However, there are little researches available in documents on these two types of SPSWs and reasonable design methods, which prevent its wider generalization and application.Supported by the practical project, numerical analysis and experimental research are conducted to study the types of SPSWs mentioned above. The main content can be divided into the following5parts:(1) research on the mechanical behavior of ordinary SPSW;(2) research on the design of SPSW with vertical stiffeners;(3) experiments on multi-layer SPSWs under cyclic load;(4) research on the design of SPSWs with rectangular openings;(5) research on the detailed construction measures of SPSWs. Then after, the research results are applied to the engineering area and good effects have been achieved. It indicates the research findings are feasible and applicable to the engineering fields. The research work will contribute a lot to the further development and wider application of SPSW.
