Since the isolation structure and the response control structure showed a perfect performance in the Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake, dampers added structures have been widely studied in China and abroad during past two decades. In Japan, the engineers commonly use two simple design method, equivalent linearization technique and energy balance based method, to identified damper setting parameters initially, and then verificate it by using nonlinear time history analysis method. In this paper, the equivalent linearization technique and energy balance based method were investigated combining with the engineering examples. Some conclusions made as follows:1. Steel dampers ware designed in accordance with a simple design method of equivalent linearization technique decided the preliminary design parameters of steel dampers added with a8-story offical steel structure with the SNAP software, and then it is validated if reasonable by energy balance method. Research shows that although the concept of energy balcace method is easy to understand, it’s difficult to use by a structural analyse software. So the author suggests that we should develop specialized applications to make the design process easier.2. It analyzes the structure by using the SNAP software builded component model for a32story high-rise steel building with steel dampers and then conducted static increamental analysis for this model, obtained the simple bending-shear model. Inputed the standard wave and artifical earthquake waves for the simple model, respectively. The inelastic time history analysis results show that:although according to the simple design theory of equivalent linearization technique showed that the upper storys do not need adding dampers, but inelastic time history analysis of the upper storys were not consistent with the expected results, so it should be design of the whole storys damper continuous configuration to avoid concentrated damage.3. The pushover analysis results of a32-story high-rise building with conventional braces showed that:bending deformation of inner deformation is very obvious in the high-rise buildings. When creating a simple vibration analysis model, bending-shear story model will be more reasonable than shear story model.4. Designed oil dampers added to a existing24-story high-rise building based on the equivalent linearization technique, and then used the SNAP software comprehensive analyse the original structure and the structure of adding oil dampers under severe earthquakes considering inner story drift and distribution of ductility ratio. According to the results of the scheme was consistent well with the design target, once again verified that the equivalent linearization technique is usability at designing dampers in reinforcement engineering.
