Abstract/Summary:
Greenway, functionally a corridor, is composed of ecological, recreational, historical and cultural significance. It is a vital or central concept of framework for an environmental conservation, heritage protection and or green infrastructure reconstruction either at local or state level. Thus, this study is to apply greenway concept into inner urban-streams or rivers’landscape planning and design. Also, a comprehensive case study is to develop and to analysis the function of urban streams further. The outcomes, for both of greenway and urban streams, are closely related to urban storm or runoff water management, heat island effect mitigation and restoration of biological diversity. Further studies are then to examine greenway concept with improving quality of recreation and protection of historic sites. Overall, this study has reviewed a specific old inner city area, Jiangbei District, as a site and introduced a possible urban development and or orientation in planning and design process. In the end, a proposed preliminary scheme of urban stream is designed and details are shown. The following are major contents in this study.(1) Putting forward the measures in storm water management in course of building the riverside greenways, including setting the detention ponds, certain width of the buffer, the measures to prevent erosion and ensuring the permeability of the riverbed.(2) Putting forward the measures in relieving the heat island effect in course of building the riverside greenways,including making full use of water cooling effect, construction of a certain width of the green belt, increasing vegetation coverage, and mixed planting.(3) Putting forward the measures in improving biodiversity in course of building the riverside greenway s,including improve of water quality, recovering the zigzag of the river, improving of spatial heterogeneity of landscape, building a variety of habitats, recovering of hydrological process,choosing native plants,and limiting the development of recreation.(4) Riverside greenways provide non-motorized system and leisure spaces.We need to set up the corresponding facilities and sighs according to different ages and different recreation needs. Riverside greenways also will protect historical and cultural relics, and the steps include investigating and counting the historical and cultural resources along the river, determining the protection object and principle, landscape designing adapted to history field and combined with recreation route,and finally providing interpretation system.(5) Taking the old city area of Fuzhou as the research object, combining the theory of the riverside greenway planning and design, analyze the current situation and carry on simulated planning and design. The result will provide practice guidance for the following construction of urban riverside greenways.(6) State mechanisms of construction include public participation and department cooperation,as well as measures of management, operation and maintenance.
