Rapid progression in modern science and technology have penetrated people’s lives andinfluenced people’s attitude, expectations, as well as perceptions. Art as a fundamental humanexpression, long existed before modern information age, is no exception to this phenomenathus giving rise to the new forms of art infused and augmented by technology. This is not thefirst time art has undergone rapid transformation. Printing press and analog photography areexamples where art stepped on the acceleration paddle and now art is converged with digitaltechnology that has the capability to instantly converts everything from text to motion picturesinto zeors and ones and can be accessed and shared by more people faster ever before. Thisform of digital art creation, expression, and consumption spurs massive possibilities andinnovation. It is here to stay; there is no going back.Art’s progress is observed from itsmovement from a private interior space enjoyed by the elite to outdoor settings consumed bythe general public. This movement impacts publics perception and psychology and more newways of expression and interactivity are created to satiate public’s appetite for this new form ofpublic art, which we call public art2.0.This paper discusses the expression of light as a form of public art and its relationship withurban public space with examples of light showcases around the world followed by an actualpracticum in Sintorderoad Light Festival at Eindhoven, Holland. As the primary attraction, themanipulation and expression of light evolved from its functional form to become the aestheticenabling light spectrums to create digital public art.This paper concludes that the convergence of new media and public art can is already here.Urban art does not have to involve paint brushes or printed facades, it can be expressed throughan planned manipulation of light to further engage with interact with the audience. Possibilitiesof digital art in public space endless, the only limitation is our creativity.
