Steering system is one of the core system for the forklift to drive safety and improve the efficiency. With the development of electronic technology and the growth of awareness of environmental protection, electric power steering system is gradually replace the traditional hydraulic power steering system and applied in electric forklift due to its advantages. In this paper, we study control strategy of power steering system and design method of control unit’s software and hardware for electric forklift, the work summarized as follows:first, we study control strategy of power steering system for electric forklift. Brushless DC motor as the core, from the power control strategy, the PID closed-loop control algorithm and PWM modulation methods of power steering system related control strategies for electric forklift are studied; secondly, control system simulation model of power motor is established, and simulation analysis. In order to verify that control effect of control strategy in the steering system, establish mathematical model of BLDCM, and simultaneously establish the Simulink simulation mode of the controller and BLDCM, then the PID parameters, torque sensor, motor current and motor speed signal waveform is obtained by simulation analysis after control strategy’s operation; third, we study hardware design method of power steering controller for electric forklift. Propose hardware circuit design, that is TMS320F28035digital signal processor as the master control chip, and DRV8301front drive of BLDCM as drive chip; fourth, study controller software design method of power steering system for electric forklift. Finally, design the prototype and analyze the system platform. According to the research results, we make the controller’s prototype, and verify it in test platform of power steering system for forklift truck, and the design of the controller prototype can meet the requirement of power steering system for electric forklift. In addition, the waveform of voltage and current is same as results of Simulink simulation, confirm the validity of the control strategy and the feasibility of the hardware and software design scheme of controller.
