The arch dam is a complex spatial shell structure and famous for the reasonable structure and beautiful shape. it makes full use of the strength of the bulding materials and saves a lot of quantities, so it is regarded as one of the preferred dam. But the design method of arch dam is more complex, and the dam shape has an important impact on the security and stability of the arch dam, so this paper proposes the intelligent optimization of arch dam based on AN SYS finite element.First of all, this paper describes the arch dam’s background and implications for research as well as the optimization method used at home and abroad. Nowadays, the shape optimization of arch dam occupies an important position in structural design. It is an important part of design and manufacturing, and the staff can obtain a more complete and rational design from a number of programs. In recent decades, a variety of optimization methods have been proposed by scholars and been widely used for the optimization of arch dam, and it makes remarkable achievements. According to the charactoristics of the arch dam’s stress,we should take the two aspects into consideration during the arch dam design, On the one hand, combined with the actual situation of no tensile of the concrete, we should minimize tensile stress of the dam, and make the compressive stress more uniform, and then make the load transfer to abutment through the arch; on the other hand, the abutment’s thrust should try to pass to the two sides of the mountain to enhance the sliding stability of skewback and reduce the rock deformation. Generally speaking, three essential factors, the stress of arch dam, the stability of abutment and the cost of arch dam, must be considered.Secondly, On the basis of the finite element analysis software ANSYS, the paper proposes the modeling and stucture anlysis method of arch dam based on parametric design language APDL.Arch dam parameters automatically reading and solid modeling is created by the prgramming of ANSYS parametric design language APDL. It greatlly reduces the repeated time cosumed in conventional design process and the modification is more simple and efficient.Finally, the author takes arch dam’s geometrical characteristics as design variables, and takes the dam’s volume and the dam’s stress as single-objective respectively to establish optimization model. The author should consider the geometrical constraint, stabilization constraint and stress constraint, and use Particle swarm optimization to the parabolic hyperbolic arch dam’s optimization design and programming, and then call each other through the Particle swarm optimization program and ANSYS finite element program to achieve the optimization goals.This paper makes an optimal design of the shape of arch dam, and proves that the particle swarm optimization is feasible to apply to arch dam optimal design. In general, the priciple of the optimization method is simple, the calculation process is clear and easy to understand, it becomes more concise to optimize the design of the concrete arch dam.
