Cemented Sand and Gravel Dam, abbr. for CSG dam, is a new type of gravity dam, emphasizing the new concept of optimizing dam structure to make better use of local materials. The CSG dam has many advantages, such as economic, environmental friendly and short construction period. Conventional gravity dams is a safe dam type with a long history, so there is a lot of work to be done to make sure of their safety when building CSG dams in China and building gravity dam under new situation.Research on optimal cross-section of CSG and conventional gravity dams with discussions on design principles have been made in this thesis. Main achievements and innovations are abstracted as following:1. The optimal cross-section of gravity dam under different principle (China, USA, Switzerland, Japan) with different condition is studied. The section difference were studied.2. Based on the Fracture Mechanics, the optimal gravity cross-section considering hydraulic fracturing is studied. Results indicated that it was stricter than no-tensile stress principle in shape design for the dam height over200m. The higher the dam, the deeper the crack, the smaller the dam tensile strength, the cross-section is increased.3. The optimal cross-section of CSG dam is studied. Results indicated that dam required material strength Cp,dam height H and bedrock condition f affected the dam shape. The scope application of optimal symmetrical cross section is proposed.4. The relationship of required material strength Cp and dam height H is discussed.
