Tires are the necessary product of automobile and aircraft industries. In recent years, with the rapid development of automobile industry, the requirement on performance of the tire is highly increased. Tire Thread is one of main causes of these properties, so improving the tread design system and changing the design method is an important way to improve the quality of tire. From view of pattern design, designers need faster and more accurate tools, the traditional design method has became disadvantages such like long design cycle, high labor costs and greatly influenced by human factors, so enterprises urgently need a kind of new design method based on CAD soft to improve efficiency, standardize the design process. This paper presented a new design method according to the above requirements, and developed the design system to meet the requirement of enterprise product design.The present situation of tire design industry and the direction of development were introduced in this paper. The classification method, tire structure and characteristics of each part are given. Kinds of theoretical knowledge are applied to tire design. This paper gives the list of common nouns in tire design and summarizes the existing tire design method. In order to avoid the drawbacks of existing method, improve the efficiency and quality of tire design, this paper proposed a new3D pattern design method. Expound the concept of parametric and user define feature, explain the function of them in product design. Through the comparison between kinds of CAD software re-development, choose CATIA as the carrier.This paper puts forward a set of method on tire3D pattern automatic design system development. The system consists of four modules:groove, groove split, decoration design and engineering design. Introduction the development method of every module detailed. The whole system are based on the Specification of design quality and process, good and fast design efficiency, so it could meet the requirements of design department.
