The implementation and application of the GPS system has a history of more than ten years. With the rapid development of science and technology in these years, the use of GPS timing system with state-of-the-art technology, excellent timing performance, high reliability, security, performance, maintenance and managementetc, applied in all walks of life. Especially with the increasing size of the power system and the constant changes of its system, GPS applications in the power system is a very viable, very hot trend of development.The paper firstly has a detailed description of the GPS positioning system, which introduces the knowledge and principles of composition and explains GPS time system and navigation message Secondly, the time synchronization system of the power station has been designed by making use of the application of GPS precise timing synchronization apparatus. Then, it puts forward the issue of the wide area time synchronization system of the power system, which also states the significance of establishing the wide area time synchronization system. At the same time, the design work will be carried out with the support of its practical and theoretical meaning. Lastly, it concisely introduces the specific application of time synchronization system of the power system.
