With the sustainable development of national economy, the car ownership in China grows at a faster rate every year. As the main way of road transportation, the car ownership of passengers increased dramatically. Due to the continuous improvement of road conditions, the mainline coaches in China have developed rapidly in the directions of large scale and high speed. But meanwhile, the casualty rates resulted from traffic accident are still in a high level and the death rate per10000vehicles in the road traffic is much larger than the major developed countries, especially collisions and rollovers of the coach occupying a high proportion of serious accidents. This causes huge loss to national life and property security. Therefore, the crash safety of the coach has drawn widespread concern of all parties in our country.Taking a certain type of integral coach as the research object and based on the real coach crash experiments, the research topic introduces the frontal impact simulation analysis of the integral coach. The paper studies the car crashworthiness and puts forward an optimization and improvement scheme, aiming at the problem of the coach that the small deformation in head-on crash is too large.The paper describes the basic theory and method used in the research of car crashworthiness——nonlinear dynamic finite element theory, and analyzes the control equations and the basic principles of the theory, particularly explaining the non-linear characteristics of the coach crash. The paper details the generation step of the coach’s and finite element model, and uses pre-treatment Hypermesh in geometric model cleanup, choice of material properties, unit attribute selection, cell size, mesh, grid, quality inspection etc. Applying Solder joints, contact to assemble all coach construction components into a whole and processing the generation of the contact surface and the control of hourglass, establishes the finite element model of coach crash. The paper sets the impact parameter reasonably, submits LS-Dyna solve, calculates the finite element model of the coach frontal crash simulation and compares with the experimental data to verify the accuracy of the simulation, to analyze the survival space of the driver and front-seat passengers.Through three aspects as material thickness, material type and cross sectional shape, the paper studies how to improve the crashworthiness of the thin-walled straight beam structure that is used in the integral-type coach chassis, improvement of coach models, and comparison analysis between the crashworthiness model before and after improving, then evaluates the improvement program.
